Literacy Land Icons

The brief was to design the main icon design, plus specific subject area icons for the Literacy Land subject area of the Avantis Education Eduverse portal. The initial design request was for one main icon for the land, with the option of having the land name displayed on it, and with yellow as the background colour as this was the colour that had bene chosen as the theme for the land.

Given that the land itself covered several different areas of literacy, as well as being aimed at students in primary and secondary education, had to reflect that in the design i.e. not be too childlike or fairytale-esque. The design was developed though several concepts with feedback from the CEO up until the final approved version and given the icon was going to be used in a variety of sizes both in print and digital media, creating a design that would remain legible at smaller sizes was an important factor in the design concept stage.

When the variety of subject areas was increased there was then a need for other icons to recreated to represent those zones. Again these needed to be able to be utilised at a variety of sizes and fit in with the design style of the main land icon. The icon designs went through several concepts stages, with the elements in the designs being created from scratch and sourced from stock sites, and were developed through feedback and input from two members of the education service team, with final approval then given by the department head.
